CF Afghanistan ID

I was just wondering what's the patch on the left arm of the middle guy:

What's its purpose? I assume it's an IR IFF patch, is that correct? Is it only Canadians who use it, or other countries also do?

Thanks!

The black an white patch is IFF with IR an illum(cat eye material) under the IFF patch is the ISAF patch an it has no IRR, etc. The black/white IFF patch I've only seen Canadians wear, but we also wear IR flags same with the Americans an the Brits also have IR patches. Not to sure about the other Nationalities, but I would assume they would have some kind of IR patch.

That precisely answers my question on the IFF patch. Thanks!

i know that for when i was over there, we taped up the glow and reflective portions of the patch.
i'll see if i can dig up a decent picture of it. i tended to not even bother wearing it though.

I made one by myself from diff. materials

used:
- a piece of plastic as a base
- pieces of white-black marine striped glowing tape
- a piece of reflective sticky tape
- velcro on back of basement
- white thread and needle

Looks crude but not bad on my OTW shirt together with the IR flag and ISAF patch

You can only see half in this picture, but it's an example of the same patch. The glow portion has been covered with gun tape. Other guys will do the same but may even tape up the reflective portion as well. There's really no hard and fast rule on them regarding wear. As Yeoman pointed out sometimes it's either not worn at all by choice, or by the mere fact that they tend to fall apart just from regular wear on the uniform.

A guy I used to work with was over in Afghanistan, he's now gone back on a second tour of duty as a Reservist.

I was in TF 308 as well. I left Mushan right after Kandak 2 was rotated out. Two weeks after I left the Vandoo's arrived. I had been asked to stay the extra time to help with the rip...but as it was I was sent home with my original platoon from force protection.
