Just keep the strands short near your wrists and on the hood/hat.
And where ever you could step on it or have it tangle with stuff.
Having it too long is a waist and will look like crap.
I just use the jute strands, maybe 5 strands of about 12 inchs long and tie them on the net in the middle, so I end up with a lump of 10 strands, 6 inchs long. I vary my lenghts a lot, depending on the location of where I tie them.
Keep in mind that they will also shrink a little when they get wet and dried.
